If you’ve joined the thousands of other drivers in the electric car revolution, then you may be wondering if your electric car needs an MOT. The answer is yes. In line with UK regulations all cars, including electric vehicles, must have an MOT every year (if over 3 years old) to ensure they are safe to drive on UK roads. However, electric car MOTs differ slightly to fuel cars.

EV Car MOT vs Petrol Car MOT

The MOT test for electric cars is very similar to the MOT for petrol and diesel vehicles. The only major difference is that electric cars don’t need an emissions test. Many standard checks remain identical, including lights, suspension, bodywork, structural integrity, and tyre condition.

There are currently no EV specific checks included in the MOT, such as a high voltage battery health or electric powertrain performance. However, there as discussions to add more electric vehicle specific checks in the future.

These new checks are likely to include checking that the car’s software is up to date, that the ADAS systems are correctly calibrated and for any modifications to the vehicle. Recalls will continue to be part of the MOT but could become an automatic failure rather than an advisory, especially for electric vehicles.

Who can carry out an electric vehicle MOT?

Any DVSA-approved testing station can carry out an MOT for an electric vehicle. These days, most major providers and local MOT centres accommodate EVs, including popular models like Tesla. However, it's a good idea to contact the centre in advance to confirm they can MOT your specific make and model. This includes ensuring they have the necessary equipment, such as the correct jack, to perform the MOT safely.
