The Importance of Regular EV Software Updates

Just like your mobile phone many modern EVs also need regular software updates. These updates are important for EVs as they help improve performance, fix bugs, add new features, and enhance safety, helping to prevent issues like the loss of power or range anxiety. They can also help with security by patching vulnerabilities.

When does my EV software needs updating?

You should be automatically notified about an available software update via a pop-up message on your EVs central screen. This tells you what ‘version’ the car’s software will be upgraded to, and some of the key benefits it will bring. 

You have the choice of pressing a button and installing the software update there and then. It will tell you how long the update will take. If you are in a rush, you can choose to install the update later, at a more convenient time.  Some cars can even download the software update package automatically, so you don’t need to wait before beginning the installation process. 

How does an EV software update work?

All modern EVs have built-in communication modules. These include built-in 4G or 5G SIM cards, and Wi-Fi networks. It means cars are always ‘online’ and connected to the internet.  A software update will be made available to the car through this connection.

When you click the screen and ‘accept’ a software update, the download will begin. Usually, this will happen in the background, meaning you can still drive the car while it downloads, but in some cases the car cannot be driven until the update is complete. 

Once an EV software update has been successfully installed, the car will check everything is working correctly and automatically reboot its computers. It will then send you confirmation, normally via a popup on the screen. Your updated and improved car is now ready to drive and enjoy!
